ChemCycling (Ccyled)

How Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and BASF teamed up to turn pyrolysis oil derived from waste plastics into virgin-grade high performance products – fit for high end automotive parts

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a leading automotive manufacturer, has developed a plastic front-end carrier prototype for its first electric SUV, the I-Pace, using BASF’s Ultramid® B3WG6 Ccycled Black 00564.

ChemCycling (Ccyled)

BASF’s Chemcyling process converts mixed plastic waste into pyrolysis oil. This oil is then fed into BASF’s production network, replacing fossil fuel resources. The resulting virgin grade output – in this case Ultramid® B3WG6 Ccycled – ensures high quality and performance.

Sustainability

From a sustainability perspective, the front-end carrier made from Ultramid® B3WG6 Ccycled boasts the following attributes:

  • Recycling of post-consumer plastic waste
  • Turning pyrolysis oil derived from waste plastics into virgin-grade high performance products
  • Reduced CO2 emission, proven by Life Cycle Assessment
  • Saving of fossil resources
  • The front-end carrier was awarded a second place in the 2021 SPE Automotive Awards (Sustainability Category / Enabler Technology).
