The World Plastics Council (WPC) is pleased to announce that Benny Mermans, Vice President Sustainability, Chevron Phillips Chemical has been unanimously re-elected to serve a second mandate as Chairman. This decision reflects the continued confidence of WPC members in Mermans’ leadership as the organisation works to address global challenges and advance a circular economy for plastics.

Since first assuming the Chairmanship in January 2023, Mermans has played a pivotal role in reinforcing WPC’s position as a convener of stakeholders across the plastics value chain, governments, NGOs, and international bodies. His efforts have been particularly significant in the context of the ongoing negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty. Under his guidance, the WPC has strengthened its advocacy for ambitious and effective solutions, calling on negotiators to maintain momentum toward a treaty that reduces plastic pollution while recognising the essential role plastics play in society.

Upon his re-election, Mermans expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him, stating: “I am honoured to continue serving as Chairman of the World Plastics Council. Through collaboration and innovation, we can address the challenges of plastic pollution and climate change while advancing the benefits of plastics. I look forward to furthering our collective efforts to shape a more sustainable, circular future.”

The WPC remains committed to promoting responsible policies and fostering global cooperation to achieve meaningful progress on plastic waste reduction and circularity. With Mermans’ continued leadership, the council will persist in its mission to drive dialogue and develop solutions that balance environmental stewardship with societal needs.
